For centuries the only reliable road into the five villages of Cinque Terre was the water. Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore were carved into cliffs of the Ligurian coast, their pastel houses stacked above harbours barely wide enough for a fishing skiff.

The terraces came first. From the 11th century, farmers built more than 6,000 kilometres of dry-stone walls to hold thin soil against the slope, planting vines that still yield the amber Sciacchetrà wine. The Ligurian Sea supplied anchovies, salted at Monterosso and traded along the Riviera. Watchtowers and the Doria castle above Vernazza guarded against Saracen raids, and the church of San Giovanni Battista, begun in 1318, still marks the harbour.
What makes the coast matter today is partly what it refused to become. No coastal highway was ever cut through. The villages were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and the surrounding waters fall within a protected marine area where anchovy fishing and vine-growing continue under regulation. Architecture here answers to stone and sea. Houses press shoulder to shoulder in tall, narrow bands of ochre, rose and umber, painted so returning fishermen could pick out their own doorway from the water. Manarola tips almost vertically toward its slipway, and Riomaggiore folds along a single stream-bed street. Vernazza alone kept a natural harbour, which is why its waterfront piazza opens directly to the swell.
The sea approach reveals detail the footpaths hide. Sea caves and pocket coves punctuate the cliffs between Corniglia and Manarola, reachable only by keel. Punta Mesco, the wooded headland north of Monterosso, drops sheer into deep water, and the Cinque Terre coastline shifts from grey to gold as the light moves across it.
